A typical trip to the grocery store often comes with a few surprises—forgotten change in shopping carts, misplaced grocery items, or an occasional shopping list left behind.

But what recently happened at a grocery store in New York has taken everyone by surprise.

Customers and store employees at a Bronx grocery store stumbled upon a rather unusual discovery inside a shopping cart.

A snake, to be exact. The reddish snake with striking white and black stripes had been left behind in a bag inside the cart, sending a ripple of shock throughout the store.

Local authorities were quickly called to the scene, responding to a call on a Saturday afternoon.

When police arrived, they found the slithery reptile, identified as a Honduran Milk Snake, curled up and hiding inside the cart.

Shoppers were escorted away from the area as the police cordoned off the spot to ensure no one got too close to the unexpected guest.

A video soon surfaced online, showing the snake moving around, while officers secured the location and waited for wildlife officials to arrive.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officials were called to safely capture and remove the snake.

As of now, it remains unclear who left the snake in the cart or how it ended up there.

According to experts, the Honduran Milk Snake is not native to New York. In fact, this species is typically found in parts of Central and South America.

They are known for their distinctive red, black, and white banded pattern and can grow up to 48 inches in length in the wild.

Some in captivity can even grow as large as five feet. Despite its intimidating appearance, the Honduran Milk Snake is harmless and non-venomous, posing no threat to humans.

Though finding a snake in a shopping cart is far from a common occurrence, milk snakes are legal to own as pets in New York City and the state of New York.

Many people keep them as pets due to their calm nature and striking colors. However, it’s still quite a mystery how this particular snake ended up in the Bronx grocery store.

As the incident continues to make waves across social media, many are left wondering about the snake’s origins. Was it an escaped pet? Or was it intentionally left behind?

While authorities work to figure out the details, one thing is for sure: no one will be looking at shopping carts the same way for a while.
