State and local law enforcement in New York had increased patrols over the weekend to crack down on impaired and distracted drivers.

However, despite these efforts, some drivers ignored the warnings.

In a serious incident, a woman from New York was arrested after driving under the influence and going the wrong way on a busy highway.

According to officials, her actions caused a crash that shut down the highway for several hours, leaving two people critically injured.

New York State Police reported that the crash occurred early Saturday morning when the woman, who was driving northbound on the southbound lanes of the I-87 Thruway near Albany, caused a collision.

Both the suspect and the other driver involved were transported to the hospital with severe injuries, where they remain in critical but stable condition.

Police identified the woman as a 29-year-old from Glenville. She was arrested after being rescued from her vehicle, but due to her medical condition, she will be processed later.

Authorities say that the investigation is still ongoing, and additional charges could be filed against her. Currently, she is facing charges of 2nd degree vehicular assault.

Even though New York doesn’t have the highest rate of alcohol-related traffic fatalities compared to other states, the problem remains significant.

The New York State Police noted that more than 30% of fatal crashes in the state involve alcohol.
