Police said Tuesday that a fatal gunshot in Fairfield last month that was initially thought to be a homicide may have been an accident.

Officers were summoned to the 2300 block of El Rancho Way early on January 18 after receiving reports of someone lying in the street. The victim, who looked to have been shot, was discovered when the police arrived.

At the scene, the victim was declared dead. Later, it was determined that he was Joshua Costan, 38, of Fairfield.

According to authorities at the time, it was the first homicide in the city in 2025.

An update on the investigation into the suspicious death on January 18, 2025:

The suspicious person is being investigated by Fairfield Police.

The incident may have been an accident, according to a police update released on Tuesday, “with evidence suggesting the victim unintentionally discharged a firearm, resulting in a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Police added that a “thorough analysis of forensic evidence” is still waiting and that they have not ruled out homicide in the case.

“Law enforcement officials are working closely with forensic experts to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting as the investigation remains ongoing,” the police stated in a statement.

Officers report that two homicides occurred in Fairfield in 2024. Since then, both situations have been resolved.
