Due to storm damage and prolonged system testing, Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit service was not available Monday, the organization reported.

In order to conduct necessary system testing before to the new Petaluma North station’s opening, the SMART system was closed to passenger service on Saturday and Sunday.

The Bay Area storms that occurred over the weekend, especially in the North Bay, caused significant damage along the system, including felled trees, damaged electricity poles, and track damage, according to SMART on Monday.

The system will remain closed to the public through Monday due to storm damage and “unforeseen circumstances encountered during the testing process,” the agency stated in a news release on Monday. Bus bridges, according to SMART, would not function as a substitute transit option due to “significant delays and longer travel times.”

According to SMART, service should be fully restored by Tuesday morning.

of order to handle the expected surge of passengers traveling to and from San Francisco, Golden Gate Transit, which serves the counties of Sonoma and Marin, announced that it would run more buses on Route 101.

By the end of the year, SMART anticipates opening the new Petaluma North Station.
