Social Security can be complicated to use and access, but it is even more so if you do not have access to the online mediums that the Social Security Administration (SSA) provides users to ease their experience.
The SSA has created an online portal with the express purpose of helping both workers and retirees (but especially retirees) keep up to date with all the important information that they may need to manage their retirement. Communications used to be only made by paper, sending mail to each designatory, which caused some issues of undue expenses to the program, lost or stolen communication, and paperwork and notices that arrived too late.
However, nowadays almost everyone is able to (and most of them prefer) conduct business online, and so it makes sense to transfer communications to online mediums for those who prefer it. If a large scale of beneficiaries decided to join the new system, the benefits would be tangible. According to the SSA the paperless option “is environmentally friendly, faster than U.S. mail, and eliminates lost, delayed, or misplaced notices. Also, it saves money on postage and improves efficiency. Less paper-related work frees up our employees to better serve our customers online, over the phone, and in person.”
Of course, since everyone’s level of comfort with the online world is different. Users will be asked to state a communications preference and will be asked to choose whether they want to receive notices online or in the mail. This will hopefully lead to less missed notifications as the preferred method will be the easiest for them to manage. But this choice does not have to be forever, you may prefer online communications now because you are moving, but in the future may prefer to retore them to paper once settled. The SSA gives the option.
“You can change your preference at any time using the Preferences link in the Message Center of your personal my Social Security account. At the same time, you can request that we send an email or text alert – or both – to make sure you get important information timely.”
What the My social Security Account can be used for
There is a lot of information users can readily access online that may not be as easy to manage with mail communications, like the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for the following year – 2,5% in 2025 or how it will affect their benefits. Besides the COLA, other common notices available online are:
- A benefit verification for proof that you are (or are not) getting Social Security or SSI.
- Appointment confirmation.
- Medicare Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA)
- Advance Designation of Representative Payee annual reminder.
- Your Message Center inbox has links to your online notices in PDF (Portable Document Format) that you can print.
Since the system is changeable because it is online, these notices are now more easily available to those who are blind or visually impaired and have requested a special notice option. Accommodating disabilities is important for effective communication and easier to manage online on a case by case basis depending on the needs of the beneficiary.
Another advantage of the online portal is that people with a Spanish language preference can receive online notices in both Spanish and English, ensuring that they understand all the information regardless of the language they are more fluent in, eliminating communication barriers.
The SSA is continuing to make more of their communications available online, including forms, enclosures, brochures, and additional notices. These changes not only benefit present and future beneficiaries, but also help to reduce the impact on the environment.
The only wrinkle for now is that beneficiaries with representative payees cannot opt out of paper notices as it is mandatory for them to be able to access both.
