SSI recipients will get different payment amounts in December, here’s why

For people who get SSI, the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) payment plan and COLA fact sheet have shown some interesting information. On November 29, 2024, the Supplemental Security check and direct payments for December will be sent out.

There will be no payment on December 1, but there will be payment two days early. Even stranger, Social Security has planned an SSI payment for December. The truth is that it will be sent on December 31, 2024.

SSI check on December 31 – facts

The payment for Supplemental Security Income that was supposed to be made on December 31 will now be made in January. This December payment will have a different amount because of this.

In fact, the 2025 COLA raise will be in the SSI check that is due on December 31. As you know, the cost-of-living adjustment will add 2.5% to the income you get from Social Security and Supplemental Security Income.

This year’s COLA increase is a little less than the 2.6% average over the last ten years. Not only that, but it will give people who get benefits a smaller raise than in 2024, 2023, or 2022.

How much extra money the COLA raise gives you will depend on how much you are getting. Let’s say you get a $500 check. After COLA, your payment will be $512.50.

When the COLA goes up, couples who get $1,000 will get $1,025 instead. Which means that’s an extra $25 a month. The boost will give you an extra $300 a year for a year.
