At a special board meeting on Thursday, January 23, Newburgh Enlarged City School District Superintendent Jackielyn Manning-Campbell confirmed to News12 that she had been placed on paid leave.
The measure was approved by the board 5–4. In their refusal to respond, members of the Board of Education only mentioned Manning-Campbell by her identification number, 12325, and not by name.
Earlier that day, Manning-Cambpell had released a statement regarding a recent audit of the budget that purportedly showed a multi-million dollar surplus.
According to the Daily Voice, the suspension was imposed just days after police were called to the Newburgh Free Academy Main Campus following many allegations of gunfire during a major altercation on campus on Tuesday, January 14.
After a nationwide search, Manning-Campbell was named superintendent of schools for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District in May 2022.
She has worked in Mount Vernon, White Plains, and New Rochelle for 24 years, serving as a teacher, assistant principle, principal, and in a variety of administrative roles.
