According to police, the suspect in the case handed himself in to authorities on Tuesday, more than a month after a disabled lady was sexually assaulted in El Cerrito.

Police said 28-year-old Hugo Antonio Martinez Ortigoza was detained on accusations of felony sexual battery when he showed up at the El Cerrito Police Station with his lawyer. He didn’t give investigators a statement.

According to the police, Martinez Ortigoza is involved in an incident that happened on the afternoon of November 13.

According to investigators, a man followed the visually and auditorily challenged victim into a remote residential neighborhood over several city blocks. According to police, the man approached the woman from behind and gave her a buttocks slap before running away in the vicinity of Stockton Avenue and Elm Street.

After investigators shared security footage from nearby businesses, police said the public assisted in identifying Martinez Ortigoza as the culprit.

“The department would like to thank all those persons who provided valuable tips to our investigators which led to the identification and arrest of Martinez Ortigoza,” the department said in a statement on Tuesday.

When he will appear in court on the charge was not immediately clear.
