An 18-year-old woman was taken into custody by Idaho authorities after she allegedly left a dead newborn infant inside a Safe Haven infant Box at a nearby hospital last month. Angela N. Newberry was taken into custody by authorities on Thursday and accused of one count of failing to notify law enforcement of a death.

News releases from Safe Haven Baby Boxes and the Blackfoot Police Department state that the terrible event happened on October 13, 2024, at Grove Creek Medical Center in Blackfoot, Idaho, which is about 250 miles east of Boise. When a youngster enters the facility, a baby box there activates an alert.

According to the Safe Haven announcement, the baby was taken out of the bassinet by the medical staff in less than a minute. When they removed it, they soon found that the baby had passed already long before it had been put in the baby box.

The Safe Haven Law in Idaho permits the surrender of a healthy, uninjured infant. As a result, this surrender violated state law since it did not satisfy the Safe Haven requirements.

According to police, there are no legal repercussions if custodial parents turn over a newborn to one of the boxes within 30 days of the child’s birth.

After Blackfoot Police Department detectives arrived on the scene and began a death investigation, the Twin Falls Police Department took over the case. Authorities claimed to have found Newberry responsible for the baby’s death after more than a month of investigation.

After two months of hard work, police said the Blackfoot-Bingham Joint Detective Division had arrested 18-year-old Twin Falls resident Angel N. Newberry on a felony Bingham County arrest warrant for neglecting to notify the coroner and law enforcement of a death.

On the aforementioned warrant, Angel has been taken to and booked at the Bingham County Jail.

Because of the delicate nature of the current investigation and the possibility of additional criminal charges against Newberry, authorities emphasized that the public will only be given limited information.

The Safe Haven Baby Box at Grove Creek was set up in July and is the first place in the state where infants can be deposited anonymously and safely, according to Nampa, Idaho ABC station KIVI.
