After reportedly assaulting his aunt during a furious dispute on Thanksgiving, a 16-year-old in Kentucky has been prosecuted.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Hopkinsville police confirmed that the kid and his aunt got into a heated argument on Thursday, November 28, and that he then attacked her, allegedly stabbing her in the back.

According to authorities, the 16-year-old, who has not been formally recognized, had already escaped and crossed state lines into Clarksville, Tennessee, before officers arrived on the scene. The teen’s aunt was found in critical condition by emergency officials, and paramedics hurried her to a Nashville Level I Trauma Center.

Authorities claim that the teenager had previously worn an ankle monitor before the incident, but police found that he had apparently disconnected it. Officials started looking for the 16-year-old after police alerted the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the Clarksville Police Department that he was on the run.

The boy returned to Hopkinsville after crossing the Kentucky border on Friday, November 29. He was eventually captured by police.

According to authorities, the 16-year-old was transported to the Paducah Juvenile Detention Center after being charged with first-degree assault. He might spend ten to twenty years behind bars.
