A thief attempting to steal a tire from an off-duty Newark police officer’s personal vehicle was arrested after fighting with the cop on Sunday morning, authorities said.
The off-duty officer saw a man removing the tire at about 4:15 a.m. on the 300 block of Third Avenue West and approached him, Newark police said.
As the two tussled, someone flagged down a police vehicle on patrol and the police took the man into custody, authorities said.
One of the responding officers was taken to an area hospital with a hand injury. The off-duty officer and the man arrested were also brought to the hospital to be checked, officials said.
