Third suspect arrested in Pleasant Hill shootout that killed cannabis worker last year

In relation to an attempted armed robbery of a cannabis industry worker in Pleasant Hill last year that resulted in a gunfight and the deaths of the worker and one of the gunmen, police this week detained the third and last suspect.

On Thursday afternoon, the Pleasant Hill Police Department shared a press statement about the most recent arrest on their Facebook page. Authorities said police investigations helped U.S. Marshals apprehend Richmond resident Amir Shaw, 20, on Tuesday for his involvement in the March 19, 2024, deadly attempted armed robbery on Twinbridge Circle. According to police, Shaw was trying to flee Richmond when they were able to apprehend him without incident.

The Pleasant Hill apartment building called Wood Creek is where the shooting took place. The targeted victim, 63-year-old Peter Popovich, was transporting cannabis packaging supplies to different cannabis distributors when the four suspects attempted to rob him as he was standing next to his van parked on Twinbridge Circle, according to Pleasant Hill police.

According to authorities, Popovich was armed and engaged the robbers in gunfire. He was shot several times, as was Trevon Davis, a 21-year-old San Leandro resident and one of the robbery suspects. The other suspects ran away.

After being brought to a hospital, Popovich passed away from his wounds later that day, and DavisThe following day, Davis passed away. According to investigators, Popovich was in possession of a legitimate concealed handgun permit from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.

With the assistance of Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies, police were able to apprehend two individuals in relation to the shooting in Sacramento one month after it occurred. Richmond residents Joe Washington Jr., 18, and Money Green, 20, are still being held, according to the police.

In the Contra Costa County Jail, Shaw was booked. The U.S. Marshals and Richmond police were commended by Pleasant Hill police for helping to make the last arrest during the months-long investigation.
