According to a press release from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office on Thanksgiving, a police pursuit concluded with the pursuit vehicle striking with a tree, killing a youngster and injuring three other juveniles near Saratoga early Thursday morning.
After allegedly concluding that the white Hyundai Elantra had been stolen from San Jose, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Deputies made an effort to stop the driver at the intersection of South De Anza Boulevard and Stevens Creek Boulevard in Cupertino.
The Sheriff’s Office claims that the driver, who was allegedly wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a face mask, refused to stop and led deputies on a pursuit that came to an end at around three in the morning in Saratoga when the Elantra struck a tree close to Saratoga Los Gatos Road and Via Colina.
Sheriff’s deputies reportedly found an unloaded pistol magazine nearby and caught the male driver after he fled the scene.
At the scene, a male passenger was declared dead.
The driver was taken to the hospital along with two other passengers, both of whom were female.
Two were receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, and one was in stable condition, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
After receiving medical attention for his injuries, the driver will be taken into custody and charged with vehicular manslaughter, felony evasion, possession of a stolen car, and other offenses at Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall.
Once the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office notifies the victim’s family, the victim’s name will be made public.
The crash is being investigated by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Specialist Team, or STARS Team. On Thanksgiving, Saratoga roads were closed at Via Colina and El Camino Grande.
