One guy was killed, one lady was hurt, and one infant was unharmed following a car chase in New York City that resulted in a police gunfight.

At a press conference on Thursday, December 6, officials from the New York Police Department (NYPD) admitted that cops in Brooklyn chased down a vehicle after ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection app, warned police of a potential shooting in the Crown Heights area.

Officers were given a description of an automobile with an out-of-state license plate hanging on one hinge when they arrived at a building on N. Portland Avenue at 3 p.m. local time, according to NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey.

The car was discovered by police at the intersection of Fulton Street and Washington Avenue, and it ran away when the driver—a lady believed to be the mother of the child—saw a police car.

They pick up speed. They start slicing through Bed-Stuy and blocks. Traffic laws are being broken by them. “He is being pursued by our officers,” Maddrey continued.

Police stopped the vehicle from all sides as it became stuck in traffic.

Additionally, according to Maddrey, a man in the passenger seat tried to get out of the car but was unable to fully unlock his door. He added that the incident was caused by the man brandishing a gun and pointing it at the officers.

Maddrey claims that after that, NYPD officers started shooting at the vehicle, directing all inside to put down their weapons. In all, there were 18 or 19 rounds fired by several officers.

Officers said they noticed a child in the backseat when the woman who was driving the car jumped out and attempted to escape.

According to Maddrey, one of the police once began shouting, “Baby, baby,” to get the other officers to stop shooting while they were involved. The infant was subsequently removed from the backseat of the car by an officer who reached inside.

The girl was three, the man was twenty-one, and the woman was twenty-three, according to local news outlets ABC 7 and FOX 5.

Although it is unknown if the man fired his weapon, police reported that a semi-automatic rifle found at the site had a 30-round capacity. Except for weapons used at ranges or competitions, the legal capacity in New York is ten rounds.

The woman and infant were taken to a local hospital after the mother sustained two gunshot wounds to her right thigh. According to Maddrey, the man died after being handcuffed by officers who tried to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He has not yet received official recognition because his family is still being informed.

The driver is believed to be the mother of the unharmed child, according to ABC 7. Police said she had committed several traffic infractions and that the child was in the backseat without a car seat, but she had not been penalized.

Maddrey said the male in the passenger seat was shot and the lady was captured after a brief foot pursuit, adding that the man was wanted in a March 2024 homicide investigation.
