According to Washington Post insiders, Donald Trump is thinking about selling off the US Postal Service.

The president-elect has enthusiastically talked about dismantling one of the oldest federal agencies, even soliciting the opinions of the transition team on privatization earlier this month, according to people who spoke to the Post.

According to the Post, Trump met with Cabinet nominee Howard Lutnick at Mar-a-Lago to discuss his plans to restructure the department.

The proposed Department of Government Efficiency, headed by Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk, will have the broad authority to reduce department budgets.

In an action that could destroy the organization entrusted with delivering mail to every American, Trump stated that the federal government should not step in to cover the service’s losses, which came to $9.5 billion in the previous fiscal year.

In a contentious congressional oversight hearing on Tuesday, Trump appointee and Postmaster General Louis DeJoy defended the agency’s lack of profitability by telling Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga., that the Post Office offered a necessary function before covering his ears.

The postal service’s downfall is the fault of this Congress. DeJoy said to McCormick, “I’m trying to fix the Postal Service.”

Trump appointed DeJoy, a campaign donor, to manage a string of delivery delays and budget cuts during his first administration.

In the lead-up to the 2020 election, the former president betrayed DeJoy by attacking the USPS and raising several concerns about the security of mail-in ballots.

A July Pew Research poll found that 72% of respondents approve of the Postal Service, making it one of the most popular government organizations.
