Two Hamilton County inmates have died in custody in a week in separate incidents

Two inmates passed away over the previous week while in the custody of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, the office disclosed on Tuesday.

According to department spokesperson Kyla Woods, 54-year-old Matthew Dennler passed away at the Hamilton County Justice Centre on Thursday, November 28.

Woods said that on Tuesday, November 26, Dennler was taken into custody on open warrants. Court documents pertaining to the specific charges were not readily accessible.

According to Woods, he was discovered unconscious in his cell on Thursday. Despite their best efforts, officers and medical staff were unable to save lives.

According to Woods, 25-year-old Jacob Grayson passed out in the pod’s common room on Wednesday, Nov. 27. He was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Centre, where he later passed away, when officers and medical staff responded. The date of his death has not yet been disclosed by the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office.

Grayson was arrested on November 25 for breaking his probation, according to court records. In February, Grayson entered a not guilty plea to possession of a drug related to fentanyl. Grayson failed to report to the probation department in July and tested positive for fentanyl, according to the paperwork pertaining to the parole violation.

Between August 2020 and September 2023, 14 people passed away at the Hamilton County Justice Centre, according to the Enquirer.

The cause of death for both prisoners is being looked into by the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office. Both deaths are also being investigated by the sheriff’s office.

According to Woods, there is no suspicion of foul play in either instance. She added that no detainee was subjected to force.
