In October 2024, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Buffalo have had a busy month dealing with a spike in contraband.

The officers, working along the Peace Bridge, seized over 20 pounds of Psilocybin, a hallucinogenic drug commonly known as Magic Mushrooms.

Living near the border between the U.S. and Canada often brings benefits, like increased tourism and cross-border shopping.

However, it also leads to illegal activities, with people attempting to smuggle goods and substances into the U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security revealed that officers have made 15 different seizures this month alone, resulting in the confiscation of nearly 10 kilograms (about 22 pounds) of Magic Mushrooms.

These mushrooms were found concealed in various materials, including chocolate and other food products, making them difficult to detect.

Magic Mushrooms contain Psilocybin, a powerful drug that has been used for decades as a hallucinogen. On the street, the value of the seized mushrooms is estimated to be around $165,000.

This ongoing battle against smuggling is part of a broader effort by law enforcement to keep harmful substances from entering the U.S.

The border, while an essential gateway for legitimate trade and tourism, continues to pose challenges for officers tasked with maintaining security and safety.
