VALLEJO Due to a rise in property crime and a sluggish police response, a Vallejo woman is urging the state government to deploy California Highway Patrol troopers to the city.
According to Elin Delgadillo, general manager of Alexis Formal Bridal, break-ins are now a common occurrence in Vallejo. Damages after a robbery at one of his stores can reach $250,000.
“You know, we deal with criminals in the city on a regular basis. “The police aren’t very responsive, of course,” Delgadillo added. They’re not, you know, refusing to answer because they don’t want to. Yes, I am aware of it.
By installing a lock on the entrance door that can only be opened from the inside, Delgadillo has taken matters into his own hands. To shop, guests must be buzzed in. Delgadillo is nevertheless concerned that burglars may smash the windows.
“I think we’ve cast a wide communication, you know, to the greater Bay Area that like, ‘Hey, come to Vallejo,” said Delgadillo. “You know, they’re not going to do anything.”
According to the FBI Crime Index, Vallejo’s property crimes began to increase in 2020. According to city resident Paula Conley, her town is being killed by crime and a lackadaisical approach to combating it.
“Everyone is at risk all the time, and unfortunately, you know, for various reasons, our city has not been able to get a hold of the situation, but at some point, somebody has to,” Conley stated.
Conley is requesting assistance from Vallejo’s Police Department from the CHP. There is a serious shortage of VPD. Conley stated that she has witnessed the CHP in action in Oakland and is requesting the governor’s assistance as a last resort.
“We just must spread the word because we cannot continue to live in this manner. To stop this kind of crime and brutality, something must be done,” Conley stated.
About 3,000 people have signed the petition since Monday, showing that it is gaining traction. The campaign now has the support of city leaders.
The police department’s representative added, “As we continue to rebuild, we remain open to exploring additional formalized police service support that enhances public safety for our community.”
The city cannot wait much longer for reinforcement, according to Conley.
