A mom and dad from Washington County are being charged after their 14-month-old son died.

The DCA for Washington County said on Wednesday that Brooke Whitehead was charged with criminal homicide and Ryan Whitehead was charged with endangering the safety of children.

The criminal charge says that on October 24, 2023, someone called 911 to report a 14-month-old baby who wasn’t breathing on Prospect Avenue in Charleroi. The child was taken to the hospital with multiple bruises.

Police said that after Ryan Whitehead went for work at 2 a.m., Brooke Whitehead was the only one who could care for her child all day.

Investigators said that the autopsy, which they got almost a year later, showed that the child died from being hit hard in the head, torso, and limbs.

Police said the child had recently broken bones in his or her head and long bones that were in different stages of healing.

District Attorney for Washington County Jason Walsh said, “This is obviously horrible. It’s one of the worst cases of any person, child or adult, that I’ve seen.”

“This baby, I mean I can’t even go into the injuries this child suffered, fractures and refractures,” said Walsh.

Court papers say that some of the child’s injuries happened while the baby was being cared for by both parents before he or she died.

Dan Chacko, a neighbor, said, “He should have stepped in if he knew what was going on.”

The couple was taken from Centre County back to Washington County to be processed. It’s not clear if they moved or were just visiting family.
