Wind, coastal flood advisories issued for Bay Area this weekend

The National Weather Service’s Bay Area office issued weather advisories for the coming weekend that warned of severe gusts and potential coastal flooding.

Strong offshore winds are expected to return to the area late Friday, according to officials. As a result, a wind advisory covering the Santa Cruz Mountains, East Bay Hills, North Bay interior mountains, and the eastern hills of Santa Clara County will be in effect from midnight on Saturday until 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are predicted from north to northeast. Potential power outages and downed tree limbs could result from the gusts.

For the North Bay Interior Mountains, East Bay Hills, Santa Cruz Mountains, and Eastern Santa Clara Hills, a wind advisory has been issued for Friday night through Sunday morning. Residents are urged by officials to secure any unsecured outdoor items. Drivers, especially those operating well-known automobiles, should exercise extreme caution.

In addition to the wind advisory, a coastal flood advisory is in force from 5 a.m. to noon on Saturday along the San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay beaches. At 8:34 a.m., San Francisco’s high tide is predicted to reach 6.80 feet.

In a statement, the weather service warned that “low lying areas within the San Francisco Bay Area may see minor flooding as a result during high tide.”

According to officials, the effects can include isolated road closures and flooding of parks and parking lots close to the river.
