Over the weekend, a fire broke out at a newly constructed homeless housing complex in Santa Rosa, prompting firefighters to rescue a lady.

Firefighters were summoned to the St. Vincent de Paul Commons, which is situated on the 2400 block of Mendocino Avenue, at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Sunday. Previously a motel, the location has been converted into long-term supportive housing for 50 individuals.

Firefighters discovered smoke pouring from an apartment’s front door when the first units arrived. An ambulance was called, and a second alarm was sent off when the team heard screaming coming from the back of the complex and learned that someone was trapped.

After donning air masks, firefighters went into the residence. They discovered a burning couch in the front room, but sprinklers kept the fire from spreading. They put out the fire and discovered the woman, who was unable to flee but was halfway out of the bathroom window.

The woman was taken to an ambulance on the scene after crews managed to help her through the smoke that was coming from the flat. According to firefighters, the woman was assessed but declined to be taken to the hospital.

Although the cause is being investigated, the Santa Rosa Fire Department stated on Monday that it “appears to be accidental in nature.”
