On Saturday, the Richmond Senior High School boys’ basketball team scored on their last possession to win for the first game this season.
At the Crown Complex, where Phenom Hoops staged the Hoops & Dreams Showcase, the Raiders defeated New Life Christian Academy 53-51.
With the help of a number of players who joined the squad after the football program’s playoff loss the previous evening, Richmond ended a two-game losing streak to begin the season.
The game-winning basket was made by juniors Jayden Hamilton and Amer Morrison.
Hamilton drove the ball across half court and made a fast bounce pass to Morrison in the lane with 8.1 seconds left, tying the score at 51-51. Morrison flew to the rim and sank the ball with his right hand in a contested layup attempt.
Senior Ahaiver McDonald stopped the Monarchs’ subsequent inbound pass attempt as the clock ran out to complete the victory.
Hamilton was voted the game’s MVP by Phenom Hoops. He scored 15 points, including 3-for-5 from three, and went 6-for-9 from the field. He had three assists, five rebounds, and six steals.
Richmond had a 19-9 first-quarter lead and a 32-25 halftime lead.
The Raiders were up of the Monarchs (3-9) 40-34 at the end of three periods. In the last eight minutes, New Life outscored Richmond 17–13, and that lead was sufficient to win the game.
With 11 points, going 4-for-8 from the field and making three free throws, McDonald was Richmond’s second-leading scorer.
Keyonta Davis, a senior, shot 4-for-8 with nine points, including a three-pointer, in his season debut. Morrison and senior Davion Ingram both scored eight points and made seven of fourteen field goals.
In his varsity debut, junior Domonic Tillman finished Richmond’s scoring with two points on three shots and a basket.
The Raiders went 22-for-48 (45.8%) throughout the game. They were 5-for-11 at the foul line and 4-for-17 from beyond the arc.
On Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., the Raiders (1-2) will play Grace Christian School (2-5).
