North Carolina Braces for Coldest Air of the Season: by December 1 wind chills might drop to teens

North Carolina residents should prepare for a week of uncertain weather and an approaching cold snap. Thanksgiving week is expected to bring rain, freezing temperatures, and possibly dangerous circumstances starting Tuesday evening.

A strong cold front is expected to travel across the area beginning Tuesday, with a 60% chance of rain by Thanksgiving, according to the National Weather Service. By early December, wind chills might be in the teens, signaling the season’s coldest weather. Strong gusts can disrupt outdoor plans and cause traffic jams on Interstates 95 and 40.

Monday will be a nice day with sunny skies and a high of 69 degrees Fahrenheit. At night, the temperature will slightly decrease to 52 F. Before midday on Tuesday, there is a chance of showers due to the partly cloudy weather, but the rain will intensify throughout the night. The high will remain at about 67 degrees Fahrenheit, with nighttime lows of 38 degrees.

With highs of about 64 degrees Fahrenheit, there is a 60% chance of rain on Thanksgiving Day. Showers are expected to persist into Thursday night, which could make travel conditions worse. By Friday, winds will shift to the northwest, bringing lows to a frigid 30 degrees Fahrenheit and highs to 46 degrees. On Saturday, there will be clear skies once more, but the high temperature will remain cool at about 46 degrees Fahrenheit.

If residents plan to travel throughout the vacation, they should expect rain and cooler temperatures. When a rainstorm is at its worst, expect sloppy roads and poor visibility. For any possible alerts, pay attention to weather updates.
